The British Film Academy was first founded in 1947 by a group of esteemed gentlemen of British Cinema, headed-up by David Lean (Chairman).
The first awards were given out by the association at the Odeon in Leicester Square on the 29th of May 1949. The BAFTA awards that honour film are known as the British Academy Film Awards. The first awards were manufactured out of pure bronze in the form of a seated lady and were designed by Henry Moore.
1958 saw the British Film Academy merge with the Guild of Television Producers & Directors, which formed the Society of Film & Television Arts. BAFTA first got its name when the Society of Film & Television Arts when in 1976 it was renamed to British Academy of Film & Television Awards.
The BAFTA association gives out many awards to deserving actors, actresses, and film directors. The two biggest award ceremonies are the British Academy Film Awards, which honour the best in British Film and the British Academy Television Awards.
The BAFTA film awards are now hosted annually, every February, at the Royal Opera House in London. They used to be hosted in April or May but were moved back to February so as to come before the Oscar ceremonies in the United States. The BAFTA television awards are given out annually during the months of either April or May.
The Britannia Awards, also hosted by BAFTA, are given out to individuals who have contributed to film and television. They are not awarded to film productions, only to persons.
